How did the variety of breeds of dogs today come from wolves?

I am in anthropology and I read that as 15,000 years ago national races are from the wolves at one point in time. This is not new information to me … Btw my q is how farmers select the traits of the wolves that would produce a golden retriever or a poodle, etc.? Not only do wolves crossing another wolf? Unless the wolves were radically different in phenotype, but all the wolves I've seen have been very similar in phenotype.

Well, they were poodles back 15,000 years ago, of course. Wolves domestic (dogs) at that time were much more wolf-like, and I think over time, breeding dogs with other dogs intensified certain genetic traits to varying degrees. For example, if you have a pack of dogs / wolves, and you breed the two largest, and always keep rearing their children with more dogs / wolves, then that will end finally with a massive race. It's just a way to encourage certain traits. We as humans can do the same. I find it fascinating though, look at a poodle, a Great Dane, and a wolf, thinking, "these are all the same species.
